Torsion and extension springs
A broken spring is the most common reason a garage door stops working. Springs counterbalance the weight of the door, and when one snaps the opener cannot lift it safely.

Most newer Overland Park homes have torsion springs on a bar above the door. Older garages may have extension springs that stretch along the horizontal tracks. Both store enormous energy and should be replaced by trained technicians using winding bars and safety cables.
If a door has two springs and one breaks, the other has seen the same number of cycles. Many technicians recommend replacing both so the door stays balanced. Ask about higher-cycle springs if your door gets heavy daily use.

Spring failures are more common in winter, when steel is colder and stiffer. If your opener strains or the door feels heavy, have the balance checked before it breaks. A failing spring can also wear out the opener; see garage door opener repair.
